Platform:  I have decided to run for President because I’d like to play a greater role in maintaining ICA as an important resource for the corrections profession in Iowa.  Active involvement of our members is crucial to success.  My vision for ICA is to continue to build upon the solid foundation of providing quality conferences and professional growth opportunities.  I would also like to strengthen the relationship between ICA and APPA in a way that benefits both associations.  Given that the corrections system has been identified as a growth industry I believe we need to use researched techniques and programs to ensure the desired outcome of “no new victims.”

Vice President

Steve Zdrazil is currently a Correctional Officer at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility.  Steve is a member of the CERT Team, Internal Security Audit Team, EBP Core Group, Working ACA Files maintenance, CALM Facilitator, ICON Master Trainer, CIR Trainer, and Personal Safety Instructor.  Steve has been an active member of ICA/ACA since 2004.  In 2008 he was elected to ICA Board as Member At-Large along with being Co-Chair of the ICA Registration Committee.  He consistently works to help his fellow staff members to make the facility better, as the Department is constantly changing and would like to continue the same dedication to the ICA/ACA Board of Directors.

1. I have decided to run for Vice President to continue as a part of this valued Board teamed with a mission:   to enlighten, educate, serve, and support.  By being reelected to this board, I can continue my dedication to ICA and the Department of Corrections on a state wide level by continued self contributions to this Board and the Department.

2. I believe that ICA needs to continue to develop successful and fiscally responsible Conferences for the members. I believe that ICA has encouraged more inter-department networking. I believe ICA kept the earned trust and respect developed from prior ICA leaders with the DOC Board, Director, and Board of Parole.  All of us are doing more than just a job.  We are the key staff to meeting both the ICA mission and the DOC mission.  I hope to continue to be amongst these leaders.

3. My Vision for ICA over the next few years is to continue the Association’s pride as being one of the strongest state correctional organizations in the nation.  I would also like to see us further connect with the public and local communities to give them a better understanding of the Department and our purpose. With this we can provide knowledge and develop more support in our profession and help the people of Iowa see and understand our vision.  ICA is corrections in Iowa.

Secretary
sundi2.jpg

Sundi  Simpson is currently a Probation/Parole Officer in the Eighth Judicial District and the mother of two fabulous sons.  She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Arts Degree in Law Enforcement Administration from Western Illinois University.  Sundi began her career as a Residential Officer in 1995, and has been a member of ICA since 1997.   She has held an At-Large seat on the board of directors for two terms and is currently ICA Vice President.  Sundi has served on the ICA Awards Committee many times and chairs the ICA nominations committee.  In addition, Sundi co-chaired the 2008 Spring Conference and has assisted in planning many of the other annual ICA conferences.

I made the decision to run for the position of Secretary of the ICA board, because I would like to continue being part of the organization at this level, but due to both increased professional and personal demands, I do not feel as though I could step higher on the board than my current Vice President position.  I have enjoyed ICA conferences and other ICA sponsored activities for a number of years now, and realize that for these opportunities to continue to be available, it is necessary for there to be members willing to invest their time.  I believe the best way to encourage people to increase their level of support is by doing this myself.  I enjoy being able to have a say in what decisions are made for our association and its members and want to remain a board member for this reason.

My vision for ICA over the next few years is simply for our organization to continue to be strong in efforts to support positive changes in corrections.  I believe for this to happen, there needs to be continued support through increased membership, and active participation by those members that share these same ideals.    The most significant benefit I have received from being an ICA member is the network of corrections professionals that I have had the privilege of developing.  I cannot count the times that I have used the contacts I have made through ICA to assist me with my job, by providing such things as increased insight into organizations and programs throughout the state that I may not be familiar with.  It is the diversity of these people, and all of us working together in our demanding field, that is necessary to achieve positive changes.

Although the criminal justice system is complex, I believe it could be made more effective if there continues to be a focus on education and training of corrections employees at all levels.  This is an ever changing field and updated and current information needs to be provided to ensure any success.  I believe that incorporating as many employees as possible in training not only provides them with necessary information, but also increases investment to a common goal and pride in employment.  Many times, due to such things fiscal concern, training is many times one of the first cuts.  I believe that we need to explore ways that training can continue in some capacity.  ICA has always focused on providing quality training at a minimal cost.  It is important to share the knowledge that ICA members acquire through these trainings with other members of our profession.

At-Large
robina.jpg

Robin Allbee is Supervisor of the Fort Dodge Probation Parole Office.

I started my career working indirectly with corrections through my career as a Substance Abuse Counselor from 1992 -1998.

My first experience in working more directly with corrections started in 1996 when I was a TASC Liaison for the Fort Dodge Probation Parole Office.

I have been directly involved in corrections for the past 12 years. My experience includes working at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility (FDCF Prison) as a Correctional Counselor, Activities Supervisor and Treatment Manager. I eventually returned back to my roots in Community Based Corrections at the local area Fort Dodge Probation Parole Office. The positions I have held in CBC include: Probation/Parole Officer I (PPOI), PPOII, PPOIII Sex Offender Specialist and Probation Parole Supervisor II.

I currently hold a BA in Human Services with a Minor in Agency Administration. I have taught numerous Human Service College Courses as an Adjunct Instructor. Other professional affiliations I have been involved with include: the Human Services Advisory Committee for Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee for ICCC and the Substance Abuse Certification Committee for the Iowa Board of Substance Abuse Certification.  I have been trained in several treatment modalities and am a trainer for Motivational Interviewing and have been on the EBP Core Team Committee for the 2nd Judicial District.

I have been a member of ICA for most of my correctional career. I believe in ICA and the concept of training and keeping all of corrections on the cusp of what is happening in corrections today. In these bad budget times I would like ICA focus on how we will maintain services that are important for offenders in times like these. I would also like to see more victim programming and training. In addition my vision includes more family programming.

I believe I have a well rounded appreciation for those working in community based corrections as well as for those working in the institutional setting. Although I have never held an office with ICA I have assisted in planning an ICA event in the past. This Member at Large Opportunity would be another new avenue for me in my corrections career and I would welcome the new direction.

At-Large
jillb.jpg

Jill Dursky is currently the Deputy Warden at the Newton Correctional Facility and has worked for the Department of Corrections for 17 years.  Jill started her career at NCF as a Correctional Counselor where she was certified in substance abuse counseling.  In 2000 she was promoted to the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women where she managed the Therapeutic Community treatment and Violator programs.  In 2006 Jill was promoted to Deputy Warden at NCF.  She is currently a member of ICA and ACA as well as a member of the United States Deputy Wardens Association. Jill graduated from Central College in Pella, IA with a BA in Education.

1.     I have decided to run for the office of ICA Board member at large because I have been a member for several years but have not participated at a high level within the association.  I feel this might be an opportunity to give back.

2.     My vision for ICA over the next few years is to assist in the advancement and education of all correctional employees.

3.     Traditionally, our organization has sponsored a wide variety of activities.  I believe ICA should continue to sponsor the conferences that are held bi-annually.  They are a great way for corrections professionals to come together and network as well as obtain much needed training particularly during these difficult budget times.

4.     Although the criminal justice system is complex, there are ways it could be made more effective.  I feel that we need to better prepare and assist offenders with reentry by developing a large network of mentors who can assist offenders during there first months transitioning back into our communities.

At-Large
sarah2.jpg

Sarah Farrell is employed with the Seventh Judicial District Department of Correctional Services as a Probation/Parole Officer.  Prior to being promoted to a Probation/Parole Officer she was a Residential Officer at the Davenport Work Release Center for 2 ½ years.  She has been employed with the Department since October 2005.

Sarah has been involved with ICA since 2006.  She is currently the co-chair of the CEU Committee and she was on the Training and Workshop Committee for the DOC’s 25 anniversary Gala.

Sarah received her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Law Enforcement Justice Administration in December 2005 from Western Illinois University.  She is in the process of enrolling in the Master’s in Organizational Leadership program at St. Ambrose University.

I have decided to run for the office of Member At Large because I feel I have leadership qualities that would benefit the association.  I have a desire to be a part of ICA for many years to come and feel that I could bring valuable insight for training opportunities and functions for the association.  I am already involved as the CEU co-chair and I would like the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors.

My vision for ICA over the next few years would be for the association to grow and sponsor more low-cost training events.  The state has seen some hard times financially and good training is still a necessity to keep staff current on the always changing corrections system.  I feel it is important to host small, low cost training sessions in between the spring and fall conferences to ensure all staff are able to receive their required training hours and CEUs each year.

I believe the ICA should begin sponsoring trainings that are centrally located to ensure that members from all over the state can attend with the lowest cost and travel possible.  With the financial difficulties the state is having more members have to use their own time and money to attend the valuable training opportunities and that is why it is important to keep the cost minimal to members but to still have the beneficial training opportunities.

Although the criminal justice system is complex, there are always ways it could be made more effective; for example I feel there needs to be continued research in the reentry process for offenders and research for more effective ways to reduce offender recidivism.  Although Iowa has seen a reduction in the recidivism rate over the past few years there is a need to see the number reduced even further and continued research could make that possible.
